Marcus Rashford 'Highly Likely' to Return to Man United After Ruben Amorim Exit Puts Barcelona in a Bind

Rashford was sent out on loan to Aston Villa in February last year after being excluded from Amorim’s long-term plans. The 28-year-old had actually scored the first goal of Amorim’s reign in November 2024 and registered three goals in six appearances before losing his place in the squad. During his temporary spell at Villa, Rashford showed flashes of his best form, performances that eventually helped him earn a summer move to Barcelona. While he has spoken publicly about his preference to continue playing abroad, Amorim’s dismissal could influence how Rashford views his future.
The past year proved turbulent for the forward, particularly after he was dropped by the new United manager in December 2024. At the time, Amorim suggested the team would benefit greatly from Rashford’s abilities but insisted changes were needed. He stressed that selection decisions were not personal, explaining that the same standards applied to every player in the squad.
Rashford struggled to re-establish himself at United, which led to his loan move to Aston Villa for the remainder of the season. During his time at Villa Park, he produced 10 goal involvements in 17 appearances. Amorim later explained that the decision to allow Rashford to leave was based on differing views about how the game should be played and how training should be approached, noting that some players thrive under certain coaches but not others.
After his productive spell in the Midlands, Rashford completed a summer loan move to Barcelona. The Spanish giants hold an option to sign him permanently for £26 million. Shortly after arriving in Catalonia, Rashford made it clear he was keen to extend his stay.
Speaking to ESPN in October, he said he was thoroughly enjoying life at the club and highlighted Barcelona’s historic status in world football, describing the opportunity to play there as a major honour. He later reinforced that stance in an interview with Sport last month, openly stating his desire to remain at Barcelona on a permanent basis.
